Inline skating / roller blading in Seoul, South Korea

Inline skating has literally taken off in Korea the last couple of years with throngs of Seoul denizens flocking to the riverside paths to sling their new digs and skate away. The riversides (both north and south) are a smooth scenic way to catch a glimpse of the Han waterway and the heart of Korea old and new.

Recently, the Seoul Metropolitan government has taken it upon themselves to develop a few dedicated skate parks (pictured above) that make the scene not only skater friendly but downright fun. Must have been the x-games influence, the results range from elementary (for the little ones) to advanced with all the bells and whistles - the one at Olympic Park is fantastic; it has bowls, ramps and railings of various degrees and altitudes. It's located near the tennis courts close to the South entrance to the park (across the street from the Olympic Plaza shopping area).

A word to the wise - keep your wits about you as you coast the trails for many Koreans are new to the sport and haven't established their balance or a clear set of rules for passing or crossing the path... Just be ready for anything, especially on crowded weekends and, as mom would say, always wear protective gear.
